Partnership Announcement: Lamorinda and Brentwood SeaWolves Water Polo

Water Polo Program Announcement - April 21, 2017

Dear BSW Families,

We are pleased to announce a partnership between Brentwood SeaWolves (BSW) and Lamorinda Water Polo Club (LWPC). The initiation of this partnership will commence with a free clinic held on Saturday, May 13, 2017 from 3:00-5:30 pm at Heritage High School. The clinic will be staffed by Guy Baker, LWPC Executive Director and Joe Born LWPC Girl’s Technical Director, other LWPC coaches and our BSW coaching staff. The clinic is FREE to all athletes in 8th grade or younger, regardless of experience.

Lamorinda, established in 1999, will serve to improve and increase our water polo offerings to athletes in the east county. LWPC offers National Team, International, NCAA and top level High School and Club coaching expertise and success with groundbreaking athlete development programs that will significantly enhance the development of our athletes. It will also allow us to combine teams for tournaments and give our players more opportunities to participate in the sport. The entire BSW coaching staff and board support this partnership, and are excited and confident this will draw additional participation to our team.

LWPC is headed by Executive Director, Guy Baker. LWPC hired Guy with “the express purpose of developing a national powerhouse youth water polo program.” BSW is pleased to partner with Guy and the Lamorinda coaching staff to benefit from the expertise, experience and enthusiasm to expand LWPC’s goals to our players here in the East County.

“Guy was previously the head coach for the United States women's national water polo team, where he guided the team to two a silver medal in the 2000 Summer Olympics, a gold medal at the 2003 World Championships, a bronze medal in the 2004 Summer Olympics, a gold medal at the 2007 World Championships and a silver medal in the 2008 Summer Olympics. He then became Director of Olympic Development of USA Water Polo, launching the Olympic Development Program and overseeing the Men’s and Women’s National Teams.

Before his Olympic career, Guy had a storied career as a coach at UCLA. During a span of 6 years, Guy Baker coached both the UCLA men’s and women’s water polo teams to a combined total of 7 national championships. On the women’s side, he took a team that had just entered NCAA competition a year before and led UCLA to the NCAA Championship in 1996, a repeat in 1997 and a “three-peat” in 1998. Simultaneously, he was leading the UCLA men’s team to glory, with four NCAA Championships, becoming the first water polo coach to win men's and women's national championships in the same academic year, a feat Guy Baker and UCLA accomplished two years in a row (1995-96 and 1996-97). Having been named NCAA Coach of the Year multiple times, Guy Baker, with his 7 National Championships and the development of multiple Olympians, was inducted into the UCLA Athletics Hall of Fame in October 2014.”
